Generally, to save water, we only think in reducing its consumption; however Xcaret Park, in the Riviera Maya, Mexico has gone beyond that, creating a system that allows secondary use of sewage (gray and black).
Greywater is coming from the kitchens, wash rooms, while black water is from the toilets. Both are valuable phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen sources. If they are properly treated, they pollute the waterways and oceans depriving marine life of oxygen.

Xcaret eco-park, to prevent this type of pollution, has two plants that purify the two types of water, passing them through organic filters and reusing them to irrigate the green areas, since 1996.

The success of these plants lies in the proper application of engineering and microbiology. The system developed by Xcaret Park is very simple, natural, fast and perfectly synchronized. Sewage is collected, treated immediately with oxygen to have no odor and then purified by organisms eating nutrient contaminants. Xcaret Park also is lucky to have such a wonderful hot and sunny climate that helps microorganisms to eat.

The water is conveyed into 120 feet long canals, which are divided into sections and filled with layers of stones, wire grids, gravel and sand and covered with ground (filter bed of roots), creating a swampy environment, where aquatic and sub aquatic plants from the region grow, within the different layers and the roots are microorganisms that feed on phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen. The roots of the plants provide oxygen and absorb these organisms, when digesting the contaminant compounds. When water flows through the canals, is doubly purified, first going up and then coming down through the different layers. Upon reaching its final destination, it is ready for use and is sent to the plants farm in the park through sophisticated pumps and valves. The whole process takes six to eight hours for gray water and 24 hours for sewage. Biological treatment plants follow the same procedure and natural mangrove swamps of the region.

The facilities are also small pieces of architecture, harmoniously integrated into the landscape, with canals where papaya, bush, palms, bamboo, alfalfa and birds of paradise gorgously thrive. The surrounding areas are particularly lush as another of the beneficial properties of these plants is to enrich the soil. To support their work, there is a modern laboratory, a computer which measures flows, and a team of technicians, who work day and night to monitor the functioning of plants and practice stringent quality control tests.

This activity is of great importance, especially in a region such as the Yucatan peninsula that has no water on the surface. The peninsula consists of limestone that allows the filtration of rainwater and it runs underground in the form of underground rivers. When the dome of these rivers collapses, leaving an open space above, clear water wells are formed, known as cenotes (sinkholes). All underground rivers and cenotes are interconnected. Xcaret Park concern is to prevent contamination from reaching this vast network of water.

Xcaret park’s main objective is that its visitors spend a day packed of fun, with different attractions immersed a natural environment and interactive programs to awake awareness to take care ot our planet. Ask your Travel Agent about special prices for Xcaret Tours. Buying your tickets to Xcaret you are contributing to endangered species conservation activities. When you visit Xcaret , don’t miss the show Mexico Espectacular, It is incredible!.

Most parks start out at the hands of big corporations or are carbon copies of another park somewhere else, but Xcaret Eco Park has a totally unique beginning. Unlike other parks and tourist attractions, Xcaret Park began as a residential purchase! In 1984, Miguel Quintana Pali, an architect in Mexico, purchased twelve acres of land on the Mayan Riviera. Miguel Pali had hoped to build the house of his dreams on the twelve acres of land, but soon had different plans.

As Pali began clearing out the land for the development of his dream home, he discovered features of the land that were unlike anything he had seen before and that are unique to the Mayan Riviera. As the jungle was cleared away, he began seeing the cenotes that stretch through the land and the ancient Mayan ruins that decorate the horizon.

When Pali realized the true beauty of the land that he had just purchased, he also realized that it would be unfair to let only a privileged few enjoy the captivating beauty that Xcaret Park is now known for. Instead he created the idea of Xcaret Park. That way the people of Cancun and the Mayan Riviera could come and enjoy all that the area had to offer. However, almost 25 years ago, he couldn’t have imagined that just one simple idea would turn into the Xcaret Park that people travel from around the world to see.

From the dream of the perfect home to the thriving Eco park that it is now, Xcaret Park has made some incredible transformations over the decades and will continue to improve! Each year as more and more visitors come to Xcaret, Xcaret Park grows and it can only get better!

One of the main goals of the Xcaret family is to preserve and restore the traditions and rituals of the ancient Mayans. Of course some of their rituals and beliefs are considered inhuman or even barbaric today, but that was only a very small part of the beautiful culture and religion that the Mayans lived by. Like most places, the ancient cultures are being forgotten in the busy movement of our everyday lives, but Xcaret makes the ancient Mayan culture a part of our lives everyday.

Xcaret Park does this in many ways. From the pre-Hispanic dances to the ball game to the Old Crossing, the Xcaret family keeps the ancient Mayan traditions alive at Xcaret Park. The dances are performed for Xcaret Park guests everyday and are a beautiful representation of the Mayan culture that thrived in southern Mexico for so long. The dancers wear the traditional costumes and make-up of the ancient Mayans and set the mood of the event with traditional incense and music.

In 2007, the Xcaret family, along with other affiliates, resurrected the sacred Mayan journey to the island of Cozumel. Centuries ago the Mayans would travel the 25 kilometers to the island of Cozumel in canoes to give offerings to the goddess Ix Chel. Believing that the goddess Ix Chel would grant them fertility and good fishing, they honored the goddess of the moon with offerings of food, drinks, incense and flowers.

These rituals and events may seem like a good way to enjoy a family vacation, and they are! But the goal of the Xcaret family is to preserve this amazing culture and educate people about the ancient people of the land that is now called Xcaret Park! At Xcaret Park, you can learn and experience the joys and wonders of the Mayans. The dances, the ball game and the Mayan journey are just three examples of the many ways that Xcaret Park works to bring the culture of the ancient Mayans into your mind and your heart.

For those interested in knowing what to expect before visiting Xcaret Park, here is a list of reviews on Xcaret attractions, activities, shows, tickets and the whole experience.

On Xcaret Park. “If you want to seek adventure, to explore Mexican culture, or simply to relax, then Xcaret Eco Theme Park has all of them. This is one of the best natural wonders of the world. Even though we only covered half of the park, we left the place very happy and wanting to return in the near future. What a paradise!”

On Xcaret Underground River. “The underground river is a MUST!!!. Such an awesome experience and the water that flows through is actually ocean water! There are 2 rivers to choose from one that is completely underground and another that is partial underground and partial open air. I suggest the partial underground because it seems the water isn’t as cold and there is much more to see”.

On Xcaret Plus Tickets. “They have the Butterfly Pavilion, The Aquarium, Ruins of The Mayas, The Coral Reef, it just too much that I can go for days!!! We really enjoy it. Xcaret Plus includes the show at night it´s the all day pass for any entertainment it also include one meal, 2 drinks, locker and supplies for snorkeling in the underground rivers”.

On Swimming with dolphins in Xcaret.” We also decided to do the short dolphin swim program, which was another $78 each. The dolphin swim was fantastic, I had done something similar once before but it was a first for my boyfriend and he absolutely loved every second of it – we both did! We decided to be a bit extravagant and buy the DVD of the experience and 33 photos on disc, and the photo disc comes with loads of added extras that we didn’t know about so we’re extra happy with it!”

On Xcaret Night Show. “The night show was great. There was not a bad seat in the house. It was action, action, action. Lots of color! I really enjoyed the two ball games. The players had enough talent to really give you a feel of how the games were played. The singing was good, the dances and costumes were beautiful”.

Xcaret Park is not only a special place that inspires its visitors through natural beauty and fun activities, it´s also an eco-Park (ecological park) that allows visitors of all ages the opportunity to learn, love and respect the environment and Mexico´s cultural richness.

Xcaret eco-Park carries out many programs for the conservation of the regional flora and fauna in danger of extinction and the rescue of cultural traditions with the direction and guidance of a staff of professionals in biology, art and culture, as well as botanic specialists and veterinarians.

In addition, Xcaret eco-Park also makes an efficient and rational use of the natural resources of the area through the implementation of the latest technology and management systems for sustainability.

Throughout Xcaret eco-Park visitors will find recycling containers, where they are asked to separate organic and inorganic waste which is later directed to Xcaret´s Recycling Center where compost is produced in a daily basis from the organic waste of the Park´s containers, restaurants, stables and garden work. This compost is then used as a fertilizer for the green areas, botanical gardens and plant nurseries. Xcaret Park produces 150 tons of compost by month.

In 2006, the Mexican Center for Philanthropy awarded Xcaret´s Recycling Center for its socially responsible practices, serving as an example to business, public associations and schools in Quintana Roo that wish to learn the design and operation of these centers.

Alternative sources of energy are also carried in Xcaret eco-Park, such as solar water heating systems in the Park´s restaurants that help save 97per cent of the gas that is used to warm up water. In 1995, Xcaret built the first water treatment in the Park that process 125,000 liters per day.

Visiting Xcaret Park can be a fun learning journey!
