There are many things to do and see at Xcaret Eco Park, but one of the kid favorites is Monkey Island. Home to Spider monkeys and Howling monkeys, there is always action on Monkey Island!

The Spider monkey is named that because of its disproportionately long limbs. With extra long arms and legs, these monkeys can swing easily from branch to branch and they certainly do! Constantly moving and playing the Spider monkey is a very active and playful monkey. At Xcaret Eco Park, you can learn all about these unique creatures and their habits. Did you know that the Spider monkey barks like a small dog when it sees a human?

The Spider monkeys at Xcaret Eco Park are there because they needed a home. Although the Spider monkey is native to the Yucatan peninsula, most of its natural habitat has been destroyed for farming and are now endangered. Xcaret Eco Park provides a very necessary service and home for these precious animals.

Many Howling monkeys also call Xcaret Eco Park home. In Feb. 2003, twenty Howling monkeys were moved to Xcaret Eco Park. Eleven were rescued from diminishing habitats and the other nine were donated as babies from the Federal Office for the Protection of the Environment. But now there are twenty-two Howling monkeys because two brand new babies have been born and that makes for a lot of noise at Xcaret Park! Did you know that the scream of a female Howling monkey can be heard for five and a half miles?

Xcaret Eco Park is always finding new and better ways to make things better for the animals that call the Yucatan peninsula home and Monkey Island is just one of them. The staff at Xcaret Park always welcomes people to come and learn about these amazing animals!

Xcaret Park may be a place for fun, but Xcaret Park is more than a fun vacation time. The better name is Xcaret Eco Park because the staff and partners at Xcaret Park are always looking for new ways to make the world a better place for the native plants and animals of the Yucatan Peninsula. One of the many ways that they do this is with the Regional Wildlife Breeding Farm. Right now the Regional Wildlife Breeding Farm houses more than 44 species of tropical and endangered birds! Giving each of them a safe place to live as most of their natural habitat is being destroyed.

Many of these exotic birds are endangered due to loss of habitat, poaching and being captured and sold on the black market. For these reasons, most of the birds are illegal to own without a special permit and Xcaret Eco Park is one of the few places that you can not only see but interact with these amazing animals. You can even have your picture taken with one!

Among the 44 different species of birds there are Scarlet Macaws, Military Macaws, and Keel-Billed Toucans. The Scarlet Macaw is a symbol that most people recognize from movies as a sign of the tropics! These beautiful birds are only about 36 inches long and weigh about two pounds, but they can live up to 75 years in captivity! They are also one of the native species of the Yucatan peninsula and the Mayan Riviera.

The Keel-Billed Toucan is another very famous face of the Caribbean and tropical places, but these birds only live in a

Keel-Billed Toucan

very small part of the world stretching from the Mayan Riviera to the northern part of South America. The Keel-Billed Toucan is only about 22 inches long, but up to six inches of that is just its beak! It may look heavy, but it´s actually not! The beak of the toucan is a very spongy kind of bone and very light, but very strong. These birds mostly eat fruit and seeds, but occasionally they may even eat a lizard or large bugs!

At the Regional Wildlife Breeding Farm in Xcaret Eco Park you can see many different birds that are very quickly fading from the earth. Due to many reasons there are very few of these wonderful creatures left and thanks to Xcaret Eco Park, you have the opportunity to see them first hand!

This tour is usually included in the regular ticket price, but may vary. Be sure to call to find out more information.

The most striking colors, endless combinations and wing patters of the butterflies that inhabit Xcaret Park help identify the various friendly species that surround the visitors of the Xcaret Butterfly Pavilion. Here you will find a guide to five exotic butterfly species that inhabit the Xcaret Butterfly Pavilion.

1. Blue Morpho Butterfly (Morpho helenor). This bright colored butterfly has morpho wings which mean they appear to be double colored. The vivid blue color is a result of the microscopic scales on the back of the wings which reflect light and appear a brilliant blue tone, while the underside is dull brown color. It´s native of Mexico and is considered to be one of the biggest butterflies with wings from 5 to 8 inches in width. They live up to 115 days, and are severely threatened by deforestation.

2. Owl Butterfly (Caligo memnon). This impressive butterfly specie native of the Yucatan Peninsula is named after the huge fake eyespots, which resemble owl´s eyes and the rest of the wings also have wavy lines that mimic feathers. The Owl Butterfly´s eyespots are believed to serve as a defense against bird attack which butterflies are vulnerable to. Their superb camouflage abilities make them hard to spot when resting on tree trunks. They are quite large and fly very few meters at a time.

3. Swallowtail Butterfly (Papilionidae). Another exotic butterfly specie you will encounter at Xcaret Park. This black and yellow looking butterfly has a short adult lifespan of one month. Its name refers to the extensions on the hind-wings which look rather like a swallow’s tail. These ‘tails’ and false ‘eyes’ on the hind-wing mimic the head and antennae (feelers) of the butterfly. This confuses birds as to the true head of their prey and gives the swallowtail a better chance of escaping.

4. Zebra Longwing Butterfly (Heliconius charitonius). The zebra longwing butterfly has long, narrow wings that are black with white zebra-like stripes. The caterpillars eat the leaves of passion flowers, which contains a toxin that gives the zebra longwing an unpleasant taste and makes it poisonous to predators. At night, large groups of longwing butterflies will sleep together on tree limbs and will return to the same place night after night.

5. Monarch Butterfly (Danaus plexippus). One of the most famous butterfly species in the world by its migratory routes. The bright red-orange wings of the Monarch butterfly express warning to the animals that surround it, as they are poisonous specie. The monarch gets its poison when it is a caterpillar, from eating the poisonous milkweed plant. Monarchs live up to 8-9 months, and migrate over 2,000 miles mostly from Canada and USA to Mexico.

If you´re planning on visiting Xcaret eco-Park, you should know there are hundreds of beautiful species and exotic animals you will be able to observe, admire and encounter during your Xcaret Tour.

You may come to see them as you walk through the jungle paths of the park, and others may be part of special interactive programs. Here is a list of five exotic animals you will have the opportunity to meet up-close in Xcaret Park.

1. Jaguar. The Jaguar Island at Xcaret Park invites visitors to encounter the third-largest feline and among the most powerful in the world. The jaguar (Panthera onca) also called “balam” was a sacred animal to the Mayan culture, and was known as the supreme expression of the internal forces of the Earth.

 2. Spider Monkey. The loud “bark” of the Mexican Spider Monkey will greet it´s visitors at the Monkey Island in Xcaret Park. This long-tailed monkey is an endangered species in Mexico and native to the Yucatan Peninsula. You will be able to see a group of acrobatic Saraguato monkeys hang high up in the trees.

3. Nurse Shark. A new Shark Tour in Xcaret Park allows people of all ages to interact with this fascinating specie that lives in the tropical waters of the Mexican Caribbean. Nurse Sharks are a bottom-dwelling shark that is harmless to humans, and is commonly found in reefs, on sandy bottoms or in caves.

4. Green Turtle. The largest hard-shell sea turtles in the world can be admired at Xcaret´s Turtle Center. The Green Turtle (Chelonia mydas) is an endangered species protected from exploitation in countries worldwide that chooses the beaches of Cancun and Riviera Maya as their place to nest every year.

5. Pink Flamingos. This beautiful pink feathered creature lives as part of a large colony at Xcaret Park and is by far the brightest and largest of all the flamingo species. At Xcaret Park you can admire over 100 Caribbean Flamingos that show off the most fascinating courtship displays during mating season.

Among an exotic plant scenario in the heart of the tropical forest of the Riviera Maya, just steps away from the Deer shelter and the Mayan ruins at Xcaret Park, visitors enter the home and Territory of the friendly tapir “Poloc” (which means chubby in Maya).

This shy and nocturnal animal is a native species of the Yucatan Peninsula and in danger of extinction. Tapirs (Tapirus Bairdii) are large mammals which are often confused with hippos, anteaters and capybaras. Their closest living relatives are horses and rhinos, and they have a unique feature; a prominent long nose that is used to grab leaves and to snorkel while swimming.

Tapirs are strictly herbivorous and live close to water formations, where they stay immersed most of the time as a way to cool off from the jungle heat and, as a safe place from predators such as jaguars. Those who pay a visit to Xcaret´s tapir territory will commonly find this chubby creature lying inside his own natural pool.

Tapirs have a unique role in the ecosystem as seed dispersers; which helps maintain the biological diversity of the tropical jungle where they live in such as the southeastern states of Mexico like Campeche, Chiapas and Quintana Roo. They are also one of the largest endangered land mammals, primarily because of overhunting and habitat loss due to pollution and large-scale construction.

Concerned on the tapir´s human threat and dramatic population decrease, in 2008 Xcaret eco-Park hosted the Fourth Tapir Symposium, which brought together a group of experts including biologists, environmental educators, captivity specialists, academics and international researchers dedicated to conserving tapirs and their habitat through strategic-action planning in countries where tapirs live.

All Xcaret Tickets include admission to Xcaret´s Tapir Territory, from the Xcaret Basic entrance to the most personalized Xcaret Tour (Xcaret Plus, Xcaret Two Days).

Xcaret Orchid Greenhouse is one of the many wonderful natural attractions of the Park an inspiring place next to the Mushroom Farm, where a wide range of colorful Mayan orchids grow silently next to the exotic flora of the Riviera Maya.

At Xcaret´s Orchid Greenhouse, a dedicated staff works to reproduce many different species of wild orchids, as well as hybrid species by the “in vitro” technique, to help the propagation of orchids that are in the brink of extinction due to deforestation and the unrestrained collection of this precious plant.

The orchid exhibition at Xcaret eco-Park opened in July in 1996 offering visitors the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful presence of orchids and learn the different stages of from their reproduction until they are fully grown and blooming. In Xcaret´s Orchid Greenhouse shows off the three stages of plant´s growing process: the pollination of the flower (or insemination which orchids carry out with their same pollen), cultivation in vitro, and the plant´s adaptation from the laboratory´s environment to the nursery.

In vitro cultivation is a very special process. The Xcaret Orchid Greenhouse includes an In Vitro Orchid Laboratory that stores as many as 5 thousand containers, each with approximately 50 plants that are prepared for germination. After a year in vitro, the plants are strong enough to withstand adaptation and are transferred from the In Vitro Laboratory into flower pots located the Orchid Greenhouse. After the second or third year, they are tied to the trunk or branches of a tree, were they flower annually.

Xcaret ´s Orchid Greenhouse currently raises 89 of the 105 species native of the Yucatan Peninsula and 25 hybrid plants. In 2006, Xcaret eco-Park cultivated 28,527 orchids, and in 2007 the number raised to a total of 52,358 orchids. All Xcaret Tickets include admission to Xcaret´s Orchid Greenhouse, from the Xcaret Basic entrance to the most personalized Xcaret Tour (Xcaret Plus, Xcaret Two Days).

For more than 15 years Xcaret Park has protected a breaking record of more than 2,000 sea turtles that arrive to the soft sandy beaches of the Mexican Caribbean through a Sea Turtle Conservation Program in order to help preserver endemic species of the region.

The Turtle Center in Xcaret is one of the top attractions of the Park. Visitors come across the different types of sea turtles in Xcaret Coral Reef Aquarium such as the loggerhead turtle, green turtle and leatherback turtle. Visitors can witness them when they are at their smallest size, from the moment that they nest, up until reaching 3 feet in length.

Since 1996, Xcaret Park rescue projects in cooperation with national and local governments have assisted approximately 200,000 baby turtles to the water’s edge along a 100 kilometer stretch of beach during nesting season.

Xcaret Park shelters baby turtles until they reach 12 to 15 months and become strong enough to be liberated into the wild. During their growing process they are kept at the Xcaret Turtle Center, in a lagoon and spacious tanks that resemble their natural habitat, where visitors can observe them swimming along as a group, while the Park´s staff carefully studies their behaviors.

Turtles in Xcaret Park swim in several pools, where visitors can observe their different growth stages, from baby turtles up to full adult turtles measuring up to one meter of length, which are allowed to be pet if they are curious enough to come close to the edge.

All Xcaret Tickets include access to the Turtle Center from the Xcaret Basic entrance to the most personalized Xcaret Tour (Xcaret Plus, Xcaret Two Days).

Manatees inhabit the warm tropical waters of the Mexican Caribbean, mostly in mangrove canals, underwater caves and lagoons. But as the habitat of manatees has rapidly been destroyed and polluted by humans, their population has decreased and are now a species in danger of extinction in Mexico and protected by law.

So in efforts to help in the conservation of manatees, Xcaret Park worked to get the permits through the Mexican Environmental Protection Agency (PROFEPA) and the Secretary of Environment and Natural Resources, to host manatees in the parks facilities focused on the rescue and care of the animals.

Since August 2001, two orphan manatees that lived under improper conditions were rescued from a polluted lagoon in the Mexican state of Tabasco and transferred to Xcaret Park.

Nohoch and Pompon are the two adult manatees (female and male) that were lodged in a natural lagoon in Xcaret Park and remain part of several scientific and medical research projects. They are supervised by special veterinarians and qualified staff that feed them and take care of all their needs, and are now one of the top attractions of Xcaret Park.

The manatees at Xcaret Park are calm, slow swimmers that reach more than one meter of length, and can be admired from a close distance. All Xcaret Tickets include access to the Manatee Lagoon from the Xcaret Basic entrance to the most personalized Xcaret Tour (Xcaret Plus, Xcaret Two Days).

The Botanical Garden is a special Xcaret attraction in the heart of the Park that gathers beautiful examples of the flora of the region. It features the orchid and mushroom cultivation farms and a wide variety of trees, exotic plants, flowers, and even the opportunity to encounter the endemic Mayan bee, known in Maya as “Xunan Cab”, the royal bee.

The Botanical Garden at Xcaret Park offers ecological tours where visitors can observe more than 60,000 of trees and plants cultivated in-house for reforestation purposes. This place includes limestone paths that take visitors through a splendid journey of Mexican vegetation and plants from the Yucatan in an intimate, enchanting environment.

The Botanical Garden in Xcaret Park opened in 1994 with the mission of rescuing thousands of trees from the construction project of the Park´s paths that were built so visitors would be able to explore the facilities. Afterwards, the Botanical Garden began working on reproducing plants from the region to propagate the vegetation that already existed in the Park.

Today, mushrooms, orchids, wild plants, bromeliads, different native plants of Southeast Mexico and plants that are special for the butterfly reproduction are cultivated in the Botanical Garden of Xcaret Park.

This Xcaret Park attraction rescues, preserves and reproduces exotic and wild plant species. It´s also a place where people can learn about the use and natural properties of different species of regional flora and the importance of their conservation. In 2007, more than 90,000 plants were successfully cultivated in the Botanical Garden of Xcaret.

All Xcaret Tickets include entrance to the Botanical Garden, from the Xcaret Basic entrance to the most personalized Xcaret Tour (Xcaret Plus, Xcaret Two Days).

This is a lifetime opportunity to walk next to thousands of colorful butterflies. Xcaret Butterfly Pavilion is one of the park´s most fascinating attractions where you can see these beautiful creatures from up close.

Xcaret Park Butterfly Pavilion is a special closed area of almost 15 meters of height with exuberant tropical gardens, trees and paths where more than 48 varieties of local butterflies flutter in this magical place.

Visitors that enter Xcaret Butterfly Pavilion will find butterflies flying around them, and once in while they may chose as a resting place your hair, shoulders and hands. One is able to take wonderful photos of them, as they come close to the visitors during their walk.

Between 10 and 20 butterflies are born every day in Xcaret Butterfly Pavilion, and 1,500 every month. The most colorful species are the iridescent Blue Morph (Morpho helenor), the Owl (Caligo memnon), the Swallowtail, the Zebra (Heliconius charitonius) and, during the winter, the Monarch butterfly.

The breeding cycle takes approximately 72 days and the lifespan is between three and six months depending on the species. Butterflies at Xcaret Park can sip water and feed on the nectar produced by many flowering plants and fruits found at the Butterfly Pavilion.

These creatures are very important agents of pollination and are also migratory, which means that they are capable of flying long distances like the Monarch butterfly that travels almost 4,000 miles from North America to Mexico.

All Xcaret Tickets include entrance to the Butterfly Pavilion, from the Xcaret Basic entrance to the most personalized Xcaret Tour (Xcaret Plus, Xcaret Two Days).
